5 Instructional Shifts to Promote Deep Learning

Many of these instructional shifts are already taking place in an early elementary classroom. Informal assessment and individual teaching is done on a regular basis in language arts and math instruction. I feel I need to improve my delivery of the essential question. Many times teachers know what we want the student to know, but have a difficulty time helping students uncover their own knowledge and learning. This year I want to have essential questions for the students that will help them learn on a deeper level.

  1. I feel the same way, Mary. Often, I feel that we, as educators, don't make the essential questions "visible" to our students so that they can understand how their learning leads them to the answer. In that way, learning isn't necessarily important or relevant to our students.
